Feudal System - Land Redistribution game
This is one of the most popular lessons I teach with my Year 7 on the feudal system. Students imagine they are William the Conqueror and are tasked with redistributing land in England after the Battle of Hastings and the meeting at Berkhamstead. Students must decide which regions (grids on the map) go to which ‘supporters’ of William against the criteria for each one’s descriptor. It therefore becomes very strategic, requiring deep thinking in allocating the regions to ensure William can continue to maintain control. Students then colour the grid map using the key before completing the task by writing a paragraph (using the scaffolding guidance) explaining their reasoning.
