This worksheet is to support a Maths lesson on ‘Measuring length using objects’. It is aimed at year 1 children but is a useful resource for year 2, as it builds on their knowledge before focusing on standard units of measurement (cm and m). The resource requires children to physically measure objects around them using cubes but also to record this down on their worksheet. Year one could focus on the drawing aspect, whereas year 2 or high attaining year 1s can write it as a sentence as well as draw. This activity can also be completed outside the classroom, making it more engaging and getting children up off their feet! The learning objective for this resource is ‘to measure and compare the length of objects using cubes or other non-standard units of measure’ eg using cubes, rubbers, stones etc.

It combines the element of encouraging engaging, practical and hands-on learning whilst also requiring them to write their learning down on paper. This worksheet is designed for children to use objects that they can see outside the classroom to complete their learning. The aim is for the children to use outside objects to create their equal groups and then to draw these onto their worksheet, as well as write the addition sentence. There is an example of what is expected from the children during this activity. The worksheet includes the activity, a title, learning objective and a blank line for children to write the date. It could also be used as foundational knowledge or revision for year 2 children.
