The Jabberwock - Comprehension Questions and Challenges

(0)
I used this with my Year 6 pupils once we had read and understood the ideas behind the poem ‘The Jabberwocky’. Resource includes: Quick retrieval questions which require one or two word answers and gage pupils’ initial understanding of the text e.g. Which animal is the character warned of before setting off? I then differentiated this so HA pupils are writing the questions, having been given the answer, instead. PEE style statements which pupils must agree or disagree with before providing evidence to justify e.g. The young boy took a souvenir following his encounter with the Jabberwock. A further challenge where pupils are asked to find when characters have displayed a certain characteristic and provide the evidence. This is to target this type of question that arises in SATs. e.g. When is someone victorious? This is differentiated two ways with harder vocabulary for my stronger readers. I have formatted it all so it simply needs you to find your own copy of the poem. This has worked really well each year I’ve used it and turns quite a ‘basic’ comprehension lesson into once which develops a range of different skills and really helps pupils interrogate the poem.
