4 weeks of Shared reading The Girl who Stole and Elephant Chapters 1-12
This 4-week Shared Reading programme provides a fully planned weekly 5-day sequence designed to develop pupils’ reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
Each week includes:
A structured 5-day teaching cycle
2 days focused on reading fluency, including:
Modelled fluent reading
Echo and choral reading
Repeated reading to build pace, accuracy and expression
1 day of close reading, supporting pupils to:
Re-read key sections
Unpick vocabulary and sentence meaning
Answer text-dependent questions
1 day of extended reading, developing stamina and deeper engagement with longer passages
1 day focused on written comprehension responses, covering:
Retrieval
Inference
Prediction
Summarising
Across the programme, pupils are explicitly taught tier 2 and subject-specific vocabulary, with opportunities to apply new words orally and in writing. Sentence stems, modelled answers and scaffolded tasks support all learners, including SEND and EAL pupils.
This programme reduces planning time by offering ready-to-use lessons, while ensuring progression, consistency and depth in reading instruction across a full half-term.
