Introduction to the Immune System - Year 9 Biology
Introduction to the Immune System
In this lesson, year 9 students are introduced to the role of the immune system in protecting the body, including the function of different organisms and cells and the sequence of the immune response. Students will prepare a sorting activity to develop their understanding and will be challenged to participate in a role play activity, which they will perform in groups to their classmates, using their storytelling and teamwork skills to communicate their learning.
This resource has been created by Holly Sedgwick (University of Manchester) and Olivia Shorthouse (University of Manchester) and Rachel Hindmarsh (University of Oxford), as part of the Thanks for the Memories public engagement project at the University of Oxford. This team have created three Biology lesson packs inspired by the project’s themes:
Introduction to the Immune System
Immune memory
The vaccine pipeline
Each lesson pack comes with a lesson plan, resources and worksheets for use in the classroom, and a powerpoint presentation. They are designed for use with year 9 students (13-14 year olds), and can be used stand-alone or consecutively.
