This handbook provides step-by-step guidance on how to teach children to read and write sounds and words using the Speed Sounds. A photocopiable worksheet is provided for each lesson, to enable children to practise both reading and writing at the same time as they learn each letter sound through speaking and listening. Children learn: 44 sounds and the corresponding graphemes to read words using sound blending to write the graphemes to write words by saying the sounds and spelling out the graphemes The Lesson Plans should be used in conjunction with the Phonics Handbook, the Speed Sounds Cards Sets 1, 2 and 3 and the Green and Red word cards. As soon as pupils have learnt most of the Speed Sounds Set 1 they will be ready to read the Ditties and then start the first set of Storybooks which provide practice in the phonics learnt and develop both reading and writing skills.
