Monster Art Lesson | Self-Expression Torn Paper Collage | K–2
A story-driven K–2 monster art lesson using torn-paper collage to explore shape, color, composition, creativity, and self-expression. Students create their own unique monster.
CREATE A MONSTER THAT SHOWS YOU!
This engaging visual arts lesson invites students to imagine, design, and create an original monster using torn paper, shapes, colors, collage, and their own ideas.
Instead of copying a finished example, students make creative choices throughout the lesson. They decide what their monster looks like, choose colors and shapes they enjoy, add details that feel personal, and give their monster a name they love.
The lesson uses a simple story-driven structure to keep young artists engaged:
WATCH → ASK → MAKE → CELEBRATE
Students first enter the monster’s story, think about what they notice, explore creative possibilities, and then make their own artwork.

DON’T MAKE THE MONSTER. HELP THE CHILD MAKE THE MONSTER.
The goal is not for every student to create the same artwork. The goal is for every student to make a monster that is uniquely their own.
