Marble Run STEM Pack: Energy, Forces & Mechanisms (KS3/GCSE)

(0)
A ready-to-use practical pack for KS3 and GCSE Physics and Design & Technology, built around a self-assembly solid wood marble run with a motorised lift wheel. Students measure, calculate and design using a real working machine, which turns abstract energy and forces content into something they can see, time and test. What’s inside: Curriculum links to KS3 Physics, GCSE Physics (energy, forces, motion) and KS3/GCSE D&T (mechanical systems) Teacher notes, kit assembly guidance and suggested lesson timings Practical 1: Energy transfers: calculate GPE and KE for a marble and compare predicted and measured speeds Practical 2: Efficiency and energy losses: identify where energy is dissipated (friction, sound, heat) and calculate efficiency Practical 3: Speed, velocity and acceleration: timing runs, plotting results, analysing gradients Practical 4: Mechanisms and power: the motorised lift wheel, input and output motion, power calculations Engineering design challenge: modify the track to hit a target run time, with design brief, success criteria and evaluation sheet Student worksheets with worked examples and differentiated questions Key equations sheet and vocabulary mat Suitable for: KS3 science and D&T lessons, GCSE Physics required practical style work, STEM clubs, and enrichment or CREST Award projects. The pack is designed around the SN-127 Lift Wheel & Bowls kit from Marble Run Shop (marblerunshop.co.uk), but most activities can be adapted to any marble run. Looking for primary? See our free “Marble Run STEM Activity Pack: Forces, Gravity & Motion” for EYFS, KS1 and KS2. TES settings: Age range: 11–14 and 14–16. Subjects: Physics and Design, engineering and technology. Resource type: Worksheet/Activity.
