This is a selection of eight lessons covering character and theme in An Inspector Calls. It has been designed for a mixed ability group of GCSE students completing the Edexcel Literature course. Questions and tasks have been colour coded for differentiation. Page references are for the Heinemann Plays For 14-16+ edition of An Inspector Calls.

A grammar lesson used with a mixed ability year 7 class. The lesson uses the opening three paragraphs of Peter Pan to encourage pupils to identify different modal and imperative verbs. They then use this as a stimulus to write their own paragraph with different modal and imperative verbs in. Self assessment activity and example answer included. Colour coded tasks and objectives for different abilities.

This is a full exam paper I made for a low ability group of year 11s preparing for the Cambridge iGCSE English language core exam (0522). It is a full mocked up paper in the style of the exam. Please note the writer's effect question is in the 'grid' style format. There is no mark scheme included. It is ideal for mocks or exam practice.

These are two learning mats for the AQA GCSE English language 8700 exam. It covers both reading and writing components for Paper 1 and Paper 2 exam questions. It is aimed at a low ability year 11 group but could easily be adapted for other abilities and year groups. It guides the pupils through each of the questions and is complete with Assessment Objectives linked to the GCSE specification.

A grammar lesson used with a mixed ability year 7 and 8 class. The lesson uses a clip of The Hunger Games as a stimulus to write their own directed writing piece with different modal and imperative verbs in. Self assessment activity and example answer included. These activities will take 3-4 lessons. I used it with a top set year 8 group but it can easily be differentiated. It compares how persuasive speeches are used in Private Peaceful and in Barack Obama's anti-war speech in 2002. Both texts are included along with a WAGOLL answer on the PowerPoint.

A lesson based around making Top Trump cards to recap the characters in Macbeth. It encourages students to consider the different themes and deaths in the play. This was used with a low ability year 10 group but it can be differentiated. Very self-explanatory lesson.

Two lessons beginning with a grammar starter in which students focus on pronouns and then use this skills to analyse war poetry. I used this with a top set year 8 but can be adapted for other abilities and year groups. The examples used to illustrate the use of pronouns in narrative voice are fairly challenging! The pupils then look at the poems Perhaps, Dulce et Decorum Est and The Call and compare the narrative voices and pronouns used.
