Causes of World War One

I adapted this powerpoint from Twinkl back when I was a cover supervisor working in a special needs secondary school. It’s broken into two lessons, but could be one depending on your class. It goes through the basics of the different empires and some key terms.

Several poetry techniques that are set out in bookmarks. Each has a definition, an example and a comment on the potential effect it has. Most of it is adapted from York Notes Unseen Poetry revision book, but I have made some changes. Easily adaptable.

Assassination of Franz Ferdinand (lesson 2)

This is a lesson I adapted from Twinkl when I worked as a cover supervisor in a secondary special needs school. This was the second lesson (the first being the alliances, which is referenced in this lesson). The language is very simple and easy to follow. It explains why there were tensions in Europe, and how Germany, Austria and Serbia-Bosnia had a tense relationship. It describes the events (link to a youtube video and there’s a little comic strip I found online). Then it goes on to ask about how the assassin and Duke are now perceived (who was in the right? etc) for some higher level thinking/debate.

SEN History Assessment WWI and interwar years

I made this assessment when I was a cover supervisor at a secondary special needs school. There’s two assessments here as my class needed differentiation. The marking criteria is specific to my old school, so will need adapting for your own class. It’s very simple, but checks the basics of understanding of the events of WWI onwards, using historical sources such as images to help remember and to analyse and being able to put the main events in chronological order.

Quiz: WWI and WWII

This was a resource I created when working as a cover supervisor at a secondary special needs school. It’s very basic so may need to be adapted for your own class. It looks at symbols and images, asking what they represent (for example, I tried to make sure pupils knew the difference between the German people and Nazis specifically). The last two questions require full answers. The aim was revision for an exam where they would need to use remember key facts and use historical sources.

Propaganda Posters during World War One (lesson 4)

This was a lesson I created when I was a cover supervisor working in a secondary Special Needs School. This is the fourth lesson, the others were on The Empires’ alliances, the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, and Britain joining the War. Now this lesson looks at some posters, focusing on how they make the pupil feel, and then later on the fate of some conscientious objectors. My class were SEN so this may need adapting to make it more challenging for other classes.

Britain joins World War I (lesson3)

I made these lessons when I was a cover supervisor in a secondary Special Needs School. They were adapted from twinkl. The other lessons went over the alliances of the empires and the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. In this lesson we watch a video and there is a focus on how war was perceived by the British before going into it. Then we look at the different weapons (which can be printed and pupils try to name). Then the rest of the lesson is discussing the reality of war with these new weapons and the devastating battles soldiers had to survive.
