Edu-K8_Numbers_to_10_Million_Lesson 1
Lesson 1 — Numbers to 1 Million | Reading, Writing & Place Value
Teach pupils to read, write, represent and understand numbers to 1,000,000 using place value, counters, words, numerals and practical contexts.
This complete maths teaching package develops secure understanding of numbers up to one million, with a particular focus on the relationship between digit, position and value.
Pupils are guided from concrete and visual representations into increasingly abstract representations of large numbers. Through explicit teaching, modelling, guided practice and independent application, learners develop the confidence to recognise, construct, read and write numbers accurately.
Learning Objective
To read, write and represent numbers up to 1,000,000 and identify the value of digits within large numbers.
Pupils will learn to:
recognise the place-value positions within numbers up to 1,000,000
understand the value of digits according to their position
read large numbers accurately
write numbers in numerals and words
represent numbers using place-value counters
interpret numbers shown using visual representations
identify the value represented by individual digits
understand the importance of zero as a placeholder
move between different representations of the same number
apply their understanding to practical contexts, including money
reason about how large numbers are constructed
Curriculum Focus
Number & Place Value — Upper Key Stage 2
The lesson builds the foundational place-value understanding pupils need before progressing to increasingly large numbers, comparing and ordering numbers, rounding, calculation and later work with numbers up to 10 million
