GCSE Problem Solving Questions of the Day - Compilation

(122)
This booklet contains over 50 problem solving questions suitable for KS3 and GCSE classes. These are the questions that we have been putting out each day in the run up to GCSE exams. The answers are also provided with each question. There are problems that are suitable for foundation and higher and ones that are suitable for higher tier only. We hope to release more questions like this over the course of next year that you can use on a regular basis with your classes including some open ended problems. Please keep a look out for our work. In June 2016 we plan to release our new KS3 schemes of work. The schemes build on the work we have been doing within primary. We are keen to work with secondary schools next year who might be interested in implementing this KS3 scheme. As always we welcome any feedback on the work we are doing and the materials that we are releasing. Thank you for taking an interest in our work. The White Rose Maths Hub Team @WRMathsHub

White Rose Maths - KS2 - Problems of the Day 2018

(136)
It’s back! White Rose Maths Problem of the Day. Along with the usual PDFs we have added a powerpoint that will be updated each day. The calendar is hyperlinked to take you straight to the new problems and answers are provided. Full worked solutions will be provided at the end of the month. For the month of March, each day we will publish some reasoning and problem solving questions for use with your classes. Practice is crucial to maths success, and our questions are designed to support your daily routines. A new question will be posted each evening for the next day, and cover topics and areas that your pupils can expect to see as part of their SATs. If you tweet a picture of your classes hard at work solving a problem to @WRMaths, you will be entered into our special weekly prize draw during March 2018! Please ensure that any photos you tweet have relevant permissions, as we will be retweeting a selection of these. Thank you for your continued support. Enjoy - The White Rose Maths Team

Bar Modelling Worksheet - Part Whole Questions

(87)
This is the first in a series of worksheet sets on Bar Modelling from the White Rose Maths Hub. This first set contains 3 worksheets. The first introduces students to the bar model diagram and students have to find missing values. All of the questions involve addition and subtraction within 100. The worksheet encourages students to think about the number sentences that are represented by each diagram and also get students to recognise the importance of the proportionality of the different bars. The second worksheet using the bar model to solve word questions. The first few questions ask students to complete the diagrams and in later ones students then have drawn their own. The final worksheet is a series of more challenging questions that should make students think. Many of the problems are multi-step. For each questions students should use a bar model to solve. All sheets are addition and subtraction within 100. This worksheet can be used with students in primary and secondary to get them used to the bar model diagram. All the answers are supplied also. If you have any comments about the sheets please do not hesitate to get in touch with our Hub. It is only with your comments that we can improve what we do.

White Rose Maths - Autumn Assessments 2017

Thank you to everyone who are using our new schemes of learning. We are really pleased with the response and grateful for all the feedback. Over the last few months we have been working hard on producing new assessments to align with the new schemes. We have listened to feedback from teachers and schools and tried to respond to what they were telling us. The main change is that the assessments now cover related objectives from previous year groups material. So, for example our Y6 assessment does not just cover the Y6 objectives – which is what we had previously done. Instead it now covers content from other year groups too. We have done this after speaking to schools and leaders and we also recognise this reflects SATs assessments. We hope these assessments are useful for you and your students. Writing assessments is always a difficult task but we have tried to write questions that will help you identify strengths that students have and areas that need additional work. Please take a little time to read this document as it contains guidance on how to get the best out of the assessments. As always, we would be delighted to receive feedback from you. We always look to improve the work we are doing and we appreciate whatever comments you may have. The White Rose Maths Team

Welcome to White Rose Maths’ new, more detailed schemes of learning for 2017-18. We have listened to all the feedback over the last 2 years and as a result of this, we have made some changes to our primary schemes. The new schemes still have the as the old ones, but we have tried to provide more detailed guidance. We have worked with enthusiastic and passionate teachers from up and down the country, who are experts in their particular year group, to bring you additional guidance. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the work of White Rose Maths. It is only with your help that we can make a difference. We hope that you find the new schemes of learning helpful. If you have any feedback on any part of our work, do not hesitate to get in touch. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook to keep up-to-date with all our latest announcements. #MathsEveryoneCan

This is a worksheet on multiplying and dividing whole numbers (and some decimals) by 10, 100, 1000. Pupils should be encouraged to use place value grids and counters to help them understand what happens. The worksheets works through some quite basic fluency to more reasoning and problem solving questions that test a deeper understanding of the concept.

Bar Modelling Worksheet - Comparison Model Questions

(57)
This is the second in a series of worksheet sets on Bar Modelling from the White Rose Maths Hub. This set contains 3 worksheets. The first introduces students to the bar model comparison diagrams and students have to find missing values. All of the questions involve addition and subtraction within 100. The worksheet also gets students to see the link between words in a question and then how this is represented in the diagrams. The second worksheet uses the bar model to solve word questions. The first few questions ask students to complete the diagrams and in later ones students then have to draw their own. The final worksheet is a series of more challenging questions that should make students think. Many of the problems are multi-step. For each question students should use a bar model to solve. Question 2 on this sheet shows a slight adaptation of the comparison model. These will be explored in more detail in a later set. All sheets are addition and subtraction within 100. This worksheet can be used with students in primary and secondary to get them used to the bar model comparison diagrams. All the answers are supplied also. If you have any comments about the sheets please do not hesitate to get in touch with our Hub. It is only with your comments that we can improve what we do.

The Importance of Bar Modelling - CPD resources

(36)
These CPD materials are available completely free of charge and, as always, we welcome all feedback on our work at The White Rose Maths Hub and the materials we produce. Bar models can be a versatile tool for children, to help them illustrate basic concepts and solve complex word problems. Continuing the story of the importance of CPA, this CPD package offers a variety of materials which aim to enthuse, guide and support your staff in making the most of the power of bar modelling. The package comprises: · a video, in which Miss Rose discusses the importance of bar modelling to her colleagues, shows how bar modelling can support children throughout their education · a PowerPoint presentation which forms the basis for 1 hour CPD session for your staff team · a set of presenter’s notes which offer prompts and suggestions for the session. · a selection of worksheets and answers to introduce children of all ages to bar modelling. Together, these materials aim to introduce the importance of bar modelling as a tool to support children ‘to see beyond what the eyes can see’.

BARVEMBER - Problems of the Day

(67)
What is Barvember? What’s the point? Barvember is organised by White Rose Maths to encourage everyone to use the bar model. We believe that the Bar Model is a useful tool for helping children visualise and then solve maths problems. Even some of the most complex problems can be seen much easier when represented visually. Barvember provides an opportunity for everyone to just do some maths. We know that the bar model is not the ONLY way of visualising a problem and we also know that these problems can be solved in the other ways. Why should we take part? We hope for the fun of doing maths. Lots of rewards available too; BARS of Fairtrade chocolate and places on our courses to name a few. How do I share my solution? • Tweet it to us @WhiteRoseMaths and use #barvember • Send it to support@whiterosemaths.com If you want to find out more about bar modelling, then come and join us on one of our Deeper Learning courses or ask for training in your own school. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/white-rose-maths-7829241726 Do I need to understand bar models to take part? We have designed the problems so that people who have no or limited experience of bar modelling can still get involved We provide two versions. One version where the bar model is fully or part-drawn and one where there is space to draw the bar model. We have also included an additional similar question for each of the first 4 problems that allow you to practice what you have just learnt. Visit https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/the-importance-of-bar-modelling-cpd-resources-11509474 for our bar modelling CPD. Who is Barvember aimed at? We hope that there is a problem for everyone. We will release 5 problems a day so there is plenty to get stuck into. The problems will get more challenging over the course of “Barvember”. Choose the problems that are most appropriate for you or your class. We hope you enjoy. White Rose Maths Team
