Series of lessons I created, based on the documentary, Blackfish - outlining Seaworld’s treatment of killer whales pre-litigation. Fashioned on Eduqas’ Paper 2 transactional report writing - scaffolds/WAGOLLs included for different abilities. Ends with the creation of a leaflet advertising Seaworld - a positive perspective, contrasted with the negative report. Been very well-received year-on-year now - years 8 through 10/11.

A series of lessons I created - with boys in mind - about the Dangerous Dogs Act and its limitations/controversies. Two outcomes - formal letter and a report. Mirroring requirements for Language Eduqas Component 2 - ideally suited for year 9 / 10. Includes link to short documentary by Professor Green (the rapper), two articles for dissection, scaffolds/WAGOLLs and self- and peer- assessment criteria, linked to the exam spec. Was very well received! Potential opportunities for spin-off debates, speech writing etc.

GCSE English Language paper/PowerPoint I created, in line with Eduqas requirements, comparing Harold Shipman’s crimes with those of the 19th century Angel of Death, Jane Toppan. Series of lessons- questions 1-6- PowerPoint and both text resources included (20th century Harold Shipman article & 19th century account of Jane Toppan’s crimes). Was very well-received by my KS4 groups :)

Year 8 gothic narrative writing unit- teaching the skills of gothic writing using R. Riggs’ novel, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, as a stimulus. Focuses on gothic conventions, engaging openings, character development, use of setting, drop-shift-zoom-link descriptive writing technique, creation of tension, mastering changes in tense, narrative structure, planning, writing, redrafting- with a challenging focus of switching narrative perspective at the end. Extracts and WAGOLLs included. Planned in line with Rosenshine’s Principles.

A series of lessons I put together for a low ability year 8 group, based on the novel and movie, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. It requires an active watching of the movie, followed by a discussion/breakdown of the characters, plot, themes and structure of the narrative - to encourage the students to skillfully plan and execute their own gothic/horror story. Was very well-received by boys and girls.

Fashioned on Eduqas’ Language Component 2 paper - transactional writing - this series of lessons was created to engage middle ability year 9 / 10 boys. It begins with an analysis of an article about sharks, linked to the key question - are sharks brutal killers or natural predators? Followed by discussion and debate around a short documentary, with the written outcome of a speech, arguing for an answer to the key question. WAGOLLs and scaffolds for writing included, along with a series of engaging Do Now tasks.

English Language Eduqas Component 2 Practice Paper I created to engage my y10 boys - subject: rapping, Kanye West, first album reviews. Complete PowerPoint, extracts for comparison and scaffolds included.

Eduqas WJEC GCSE English Language Transactional Formal Letter writing - issue of One Punch Deaths - inspired by 24 Hours in Police Custody documentary/stimulus - guided practice, WAGOLL, support included. Excellent engagement - year 10 boys

Over 400 slides, teaching all of the frameworks (for the Paper 1 Meanings and Representations question), along with Paper 2 Language Diversity (covering language and social groups, language and region, language and occupation, and language and ethnicity. Gender is covered separately)

Complete PowerPoint (nearly 600 slides), covering the frameworks, Language Diversity (Region, Occupation, Ethnicity, Social Groups) and Language Change/Attitudes to Language Change. Content, concepts, theorists, articles,questions, WAGOLLs, scaffolds etc. included. The only two topics on the spec not included are Language and Gender (from the Diversity unit) and Child Language. These are sold separately.

Series of lessons about the Titan submarine implosion of 2023, building up to article writing where the students offer their opinion about risky expeditions

Engaging series of lessons exploring the language of Kanye West’s ‘Hey Mama’ and Eminem’s ‘Headlights’- looking at how each rapper’s relationship with their mum is revealed through the language, structure and tone of the rap. I included a spin-off transactional task for each as well, considering the mums’ perspectives and asking the students to write 1. A verse from Donda’s perspective in response to Hey Mama, 2. A letter from Debbie Mathers to Eminem. Some cultural capital in there too- references/links to Desert Storm, Forrest Gump, Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni etc. Fab spin off for KS3 love and relationship poetry - useful for KS4 unseen as well.
