A KS2 unit of Art based on Henri Rousseau’s Surprised painting. This was planned for Y4 but can be used in any KS2 Year group. Unit includes artist research, exploring the formal elements (shape, composition, line, colour), observational drawing, outside learning, colour mixing and experimenting with different media. A week of lessons (5 lessons) 3 lessons based on a newspaper report focusing on vocabulary, retrieval and explanation. 2 lessons based on an explanation text focusing on retrieval and summarising. Each lesson has a powerpoint and an activity sheet.

Whole class guided reading activities based on the graphic novel Thornhill by Pam Smy. There are 18 activities altogether that cover vocabularly, inference, predictions, explaining, retrieving, summarising, understaning, visualising, using evidence and linking to own experiences. There are 3 activities a week which allows for shared reading and class reading. The unit lasts 6 weeks. This is a medium term plan for Year 4, based on Rainforests, in particular the Amazon Rainforest. Lesson 1-Where are rainforests located? Lesson 2-Who lives in the Amazon rainforest? How is life in the Amazon rainforest different to our lives? Lesson 3-What is so special about rainforests? Why are they so valuable? Lesson 4-What are the threats to rainforests? Lesson 5-What can be done to protect rainforests? Lesson 6-Should rainforests be preserved and protected? National Curriculum links: Extend knowledge and understanding to include North America and the location and characteristics of the world’s most significant human and physical features. Locate the world’s countries and concentrate on their environmental regions. Understand aspects of physical geography including climate zones and biomes. Starting to consider natural resources such as food and water. Use maps, atlases and digital/computer mapping to locate countries.

A PowerPoint which explains the difference between a clause and a phrase, then the difference between an independent and dependent clause. There are activities which give opportunities for practice and how to use the independent and dependent clauses in a de:de (description:detail) sentence.
