This year’s theme is empowering women and girls. This lesson is on the subject of female leaders, I’ve chosen a diverse group, from Cleopatra to Margaret Thatcher. It also discusses the make up of Parliament today and representation around the world - with diagrams. It comes with a choice of activities and easy print information sheets. It could be easily adapted into a tutor time or assembly about leadership and empowerment.

The flowchart activity encourages students to gather details from the Soviet takeover of Eastern Europe to the Berlin Blockade. The colour-coding gets students to think about the beginnings of the conflict from both points of view. You could then extend this into a debate. The debate about her role is ongoing and this essay provides evidence that she did wield power in her own right as well as submitting to the powerful men in her life.
