The Secret River Practice Questions

(1)
A word doc with CIE English Literature exam-style questions on it. 14 that ask about the whole novel and 17 short extract questions. They are my interpretation of the exam question style, based on previous papers, and can be edited to suit your understanding. Main time-saving element here is selecting extracts, formulating questions etc. Extract questions are based on parts 1 and 2 only.

Journey to the River Sea

9 ppt based lessons that first engage pupils with the novel and then lead then through some writing tasks. One writing task is a letter from the point of view of a character. The other writing task is to write an additional chapter. ##This is not super-polished. If you are a teacher you can use and adapt. It you want pret-a-porter, this is not for you. ##

CIE English Literature poems 2018- Translated into modern English

(0)
I have made a booklet of 11 of the CIE English Literature poems for the 2018 examination, with modern ‘translations’ of any unusual/antiquated language. This was primarily to help EAL pupils. The modern ‘translations’ are my own and may not be perfect- the document can be edited if you disagree with any interpretations. This does not include detailed annotations, context or anything else except the poems and my translations. If you want an example, download my translation of ‘Song’ by Mary Wroth for free. The rest are, basically, the same. Poems included: ‘Song’ by Mary Wroth The Clod and the Pebble’ by William Blake ’Passion’ by Kathleen Raine ’Love (III)’ by George Herbert ’Lovers’ Infiniteness’ by John Donne ‘She Was a Phantom of Delight’ by William Wordsworth ‘Tiger in the Menagerie’ by Emma Jones ‘lion heart’ by Amanda Chong ‘Heart and Mind’ by Edith Sitwell ‘For my Grandmother Knitting’ by Liz Lochhead ‘Father Returning Home’ Dilip Chitre (glossary not translation) ‘The Lost Woman…’ Patricia Beer

This is just a scanned copy of the initial, hand-written annotations that I made on 10 of the poems that will be used on the CIE English Lit paper 2018 when I first started planning my lessons. They are not all- encompassing, there will be other interpretations of meanings etc. They might help with your planning/ understanding or be an additional resource to help you pupils. This is not a scheme of work and it is not definitive. Look at the preview if you are in doubt. Poems included: ‘The Clod and the Pebble’ by William Blake ‘Love (III)’ by George Herbert ‘She Was a Phantom of Delight’ by William Wordsworth ‘Heart and Mind’ by Edith Sitwell ‘For my Grandmother Knitting’ by Liz Lochhead ‘Father Returning Home’ Dilip Chitre ‘The Lost Woman…’ Patricia Beer ‘Coming Home’ Owen Sheers ‘Stabat Mater’ Sam Hunt ‘Song’ by Mary Wroth

If your pupils are struggling with how to explain the effect of certain poetic devices this ppt and hand-out can help them to learn very generalised explanations of the effect of key devices. This is not a full lesson, nor is it rocket science BUT it has been effective with pupils I have used it with. Could easily be adapted to flashcards.

The poem with a modern ‘translation’ alongside it. The translation is open to debate- if you disagree, it is easy to tweak. If you like it, I have a booklet with 11 other CIE English Literature poems also on TES.
