A selection of basic words and phrases to help you make children with Finnish heritage feel welcome in your class, or to use in topic work based on Finland.

We have designed this book with one hundred dual-language British-style crossword puzzles for those learning Finnish, English or bilingual. Teachers can also use the book to aid in instructing students in either language. Available as a PDF file, it offers an engaging way to reinforce vocabulary and prompt deeper learning. The unique format incorporates both Finnish and English in the same crossword grid ensuring a fun yet challenging experience that helps students consolidate their knowledge. Teachers can use these crosswords as homework assignments or in-class activities, reviewing and adapting each puzzle to suit the classroom’s needs. Additionally, for teachers who may instruct other languages, other language combinations can be made available upon request, expanding the versatility of this resource.

Welcome to the Finnish Bingo pack. This is a simple starter game for students. There are 114 different pictures to choose from. Select a single picture and project the image on the wall or share it with the class as a handout. Talk about the picture and then ask your students to select and write down 5 items from the picture. Then look at the picture and pick out all the key vocabulary you want them to talk about. The first student to have all their items read out is the winner. Welcome to the Let’s Talk in Finnish! pack. This set of cards looks at 57 different settings. The teacher describes something in the top card. The students then use this to model a sentence using the bottom set of pictures. There are lots of things to see and describe in every picture. When the students have completed this task, they can repeat it by working in pairs to discuss each picture. What works very well is for the two pictures to be directly projected on a wall. The teacher talks about the top picture, such as in my picture, I can see two seagulls flying;... then the students model their responses, using the sentence structure provided by the teacher. There are lots of different ways you could use this pack. It could be used as writing assessment for students learning Finnish. The students could write about a topic in Finnish before starting a unit, and then write again about the topic, using the second worksheet at the end of the topic to see how much they have progressed. It could also be used as an introduction to guided writing. Students can write sentences as a class and share the sentences together and they can then write them on their own. Alternatively, students could work in pairs - one student dictates to the other what to write down about what they see in the picture. Resources given to extension-level students to provide alternative interpretations of Macbeth. A thesis from a leading Finnish University has been summarised and condensed to make it more accessible; it divides the play into three parts - the divided state of man, the barren sceptre, and laugh to scorn the power of man. This isn’t a lesson plan, rather a piece of extension material which proved useful for stretching some particularly enthusiastic students. Designed for Edexcel GCSE English Literature Course but can be used for AQA and OCR.
