Times Tables Challenges & Tracker

(0)
Resource includes: 16 Progressive Multiplication Tests (Multiplication Only OR Multiplication & Division Mixed) Display Class Tracker Individual Pupil Tracking Cards Need a simple resource to support children in LKS2 to learn and practice Times Tables… here’s my simple scheme. Done once a week Everyone starts at 10x and each week move through the challenges. 4 mins… 40 Questions - you need to get 40/40 to progress to the next challenge (Makes it easy to target specific questions for children to work on!) Put the trackers on the wall and add a sticker each time they pass one and watch how rapidly the children move through! Quick, easy and simple to implement. It has been very effective in my class over the past 4 years. Once they pass all the Multiplication ONLY tests, they then can restart and include the Multiplication/Division Mixed tests (or start with those). All the trackers are editable for your class.

KABOOM Times Tables Game

(1)
This game is fantastic for developing fluency and rapid recall of multiplication facts. How to play: Put all of the strips into a cup/pot Children play the game in groups Children choose a strip and if they answer correctly, they get to keep this. If children pull out a ‘KABOOM’ strip they have to put all of their collected strips back into the pot. The child at the end of the round with the most strips wins! (This game can last as long as you need it to, which is fab!) Children can use a calculator to check everyones answers, a whiteboard to support them or a multiplication square. This pack includes all of the times tables up to 12. This game can be adapted for any year group.

Times Tables Precision Teaching Booklet

Need a quick and easy intervention to support student to learn tables - This booklet is designed to support a student to develop recall of tables through a focused daily minute of recall. The booklet has a pre and post assessment as well as record space to track daily progress. Some students need to use a structured approach to get number facts into their long-term memory – they do not seem to keep them there just by regular use in maths lessons. This booklet can be used to support this process. On each page is a grid with items to prompt the student to say a tables fact. Each day they should count how many oral responses they can give in a minute – and record that on the sheet. The aim is to be able to recall a few more each day. The precision teaching approach works best if the student can do an activity using the content of the page they are currently working on for a few minutes ( 5 to 10) before they do the one-minute timed activity. There are lots of interactive maths sites online e.g. Topmarks: teaching resources, interactive resources, worksheets, homework, exam and revision help – and this is a great way to give student this opportunity in a way that they can do independently. At the end of the booklet is a tables square for reference and some ideas for extension activities.

4 differentiated times table squares. I use these twice a week to assess times table knowledge and the children also use Superhero Times Tables, Times Table Rockstars, BBC times table songs and chants to practice. We started by giving them 15 minutes and after a short period we have reduced the time and now have 10 minutes to complete. Level 1- Timestable in easiest order Level 2- 3-12 in order Level 3- Mixed Level 4- Using the inverse mixed. With the times table test coming around, these have really supported children developing and securing their knowledge. Eventually we will reduce the time so they have the time limit the same as the test to support and build rapid recall and will use laptops/ IPads to complete to get the children ready for the online test. It is only 6 seconds per question and 25 questions and they could be anything so we have found this supports building confidence and speed across all of them.

Update April 2020: I’ve added in a PowerPoint version and a Google Slides version for use in virtual classrooms or even for suggesting your pupils use to play with each other while they’re at home to keep up their skills.

Times Tables Challenge Scheme

(0)
Make learning times tables fun and motivate your pupils with this challenge/programme. I guarantee you they will be asking you when they can next be tested and have the opportunity to move up a level!! Pupils have a given time frame to complete all the questions accurately. Success means they move up a level. Useful for Years 3 to 6 due to the extend of the challenge involved… The Four Levels: Bronze: 12 sub-levels. Just multiplication facts. x10, x2, x5, x10s x2s and x5s mixed, x3, x4, x6, x7, x8, x9, x11, x12. Silver: 12 sub-levels. Mulitplication facts, associated division facts and related unit fractions, e.g. for x2 table… 1/2 of 20 = . Levels in same order as Bronze. Gold: 13 sub-levels. Each sub level is a mixture of times tables. Mulitplication facts, associated division facts and related unit fractions. Bonus 13th levels is ‘Beat the Teacher!’ - Very popular!! Platinum: 12 sub-levels. Suitable for more able pupils, including Year 6! Levels involve fractions of amounts, fraction x whole number, application of place value understanding to multiplying/dividing multiples of 10/100 by whole numbers/decimals/fractions. Will really stretch pupils mental maths! Guidance for use/administration: Print many copies of levels required. Print, laminate and ring-bind answer booklets for each of the 4 levels. I suggest using coloured paper to make it easy for pupils to grab the right one. Put a blank cover on the front and back (you’ll see why below!). Store levels in a literature organiser/filing trays. Create a display of sorts (I like to use colourful pegs (names on reverse, not visible) designed by the children) so pupils can remember where they are and you can! I do it on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week. Twice a week works well. Once pupils become familiar with the process it really is slick and easy to use in the classroom… All pupils get the level sheet they are on and an answer booklet. Answer books in pile in centre of table. As a class/group, start timer. Once time is up. Pupils swap sheets with a partner. Get the answer book needed from centre of table, find correct sub-level within and mark! Feedback to their partner and go move up pegs as needed! Return answer booklets. All done!

Times Tables Matching Cards - Included are all the times tables from x2 up to x12. Each times table fact is displayed on its own card with the matching answer on a separate card. Each card measures approx. 5cm by 9cm. Font used is Sassoon Primary. Ideas for use: As a matching activity by individuals/pairs/small groups As flashcards during the oral/mental part of the Numeracy Hour As an interactive display, requiring the children to place the correct answers against the facts displayed To show that changing the order of the digits in facts does not affect the answer, e.g. 4 x 5 = 20 is the same as 5 x 4 = 20 As an interactive group/class matching activity on the board (use blu-tac) …and lots more!!!
