Hertzsprung-Russell Diagrams

(6)
H-R diagrams and the life-cycle of stars. This is a Powerpoint presentation and accompanying notes and was designed for the EDEXCEL A Level Physics spec. There are questions, activities and mini-whiteboard based formative assessment activities built into the presentation. Students should have covered Stefan-Boltzman Law, Wien's Law and Gravitation before this presentation as it incorporates questions and activities to review and link together these topics with the H-R diagram.

A Level Physics - Student Workbooks (for OCR specification A)

(2)
A set of student workbooks providing knowledge retrieval questions and exercises with past exam questions. They also include key ideas sections that can be used for structure whole class discussion and review to draw together some of the central examinable concepts for each topic. They are numbered in line with the chapter number of the Oxford Univeristy Press course textbook.

Work, energy and power: Electric car range

(1)
In this lesson students are provided with a remote controlled electric car and must perform tests to calculate it's range by making it do work. It is a group based activity that requires students to apply their knowledge of forces, work and energy. It fudges over a lot of issues like friction and the efficiency of the electric motor under different loads but it still provided an interesting challenge for my group and the most able students are likely to pick up on and discuss these issues in the process..

AQA A Level Physics (Year 1) - Quizlet Study Sets

(2)
I think Quizlet offers a nice platform for flashcard based learning of definitions, key terms and concepts both inside and out of class. I’ve created these quizlet study sets for the 1st year of the AQA A Level Physics course. These can be set for student independent learning and used in class as a Quizlet live activity and can be copied and adapted for others Physics courses. They can also be exported as CSV files for use on other platforms. Please note these cards are not suitable for the ‘Write’ and ‘Gravity’ activity types, they are best used for multiple choice, match and live. Please feel free to use and share with others, any feedback is most welcome, they are a work in progress.

A Level Physics - Practical Skills Handbook (OCRA)

(1)
This handbook address the key knowledge required by students for completing the required practicals for A Level Physics. It is based upon sections of OCR’s practical skills handbook but these have been adapted and supplemented to try and make it into a reasonably comprehensive yet relatively simple reference guide for students.

Capacitor Bottle Model and Exponential Decay

(0)
An activity that can provide the central focus for a whole lesson of teaching on capacitors and exponential decay. Students explore and discuss the flow of water out of a hole in a bottle as an analogy for the discharge of a capacitor. They are then required to design an experiment and take measurements in order to determine whether this is exponential decay. The activity is fairly challenging and the teacher should actively engage with and support students as they work through it, especially if capacitors are the first context in which they have studied exponential decay experimentally. It can be completed with students working in groups and reviewing each others work to provide effective differentiation and peer learning. I have included teacher notes to explain the activity and the ways that you might help student engage successfully with it.
