A full lesson with video clip, poem and analysis grid to explore the poetic devices used in ‘The British’.

A short (6 lesson) unit of work aimed at introducing and exploring American Literature. This unit provides a snapshot for younger pupils (ideally year 9) now that American Literature has been removed from the GCSE syllabus. Ready to teach. Includes: Initial culture and knowledge quizzes Activities based on ‘Caged Bird’ by Maya Angelou Activities based on the Vietnam war - music and extract from ‘The Things They Carried’ by Tim O’Brien Opportunity for guided writing in response to the learning, peer feedback and improvements. Poem and extract included. At each stage, pupils are encouraged to record their thoughts on the stars and stripes of the black and white flag uploaded here. A set of 12 library/private reading tasks, perfect for cover. Just remove the dates when you have downloaded and off you go! I use these on the board at the start of library lessons - they allow for focused private reading followed by meaningful discussions.

Full set of lessons (my dates can be removed from slides when downloaded). Videos clickable and resources/extracts needed referenced or included. I created these lessons for my top set (all targeting 8s and 9s). Several full mark answers were written in their final exams. NOTE: I asked my class to read the text once in the holidays before starting these lessons. You could adapt the lessons if you don’t wish to do this.

One or two lessons aimed at scaffolding GCSE reading skills at the start of the language course (fiction so this is aimed at AQA paper1). Also includes a suitable writing task targeting the skills identified in the reading section. Short story from Alice Walker ‘The Flowers’ so not really suitable for younger years.
