A short (6 lesson) unit of work aimed at introducing and exploring American Literature. This unit provides a snapshot for younger pupils (ideally year 9) now that American Literature has been removed from the GCSE syllabus. Ready to teach. Includes: Initial culture and knowledge quizzes Activities based on ‘Caged Bird’ by Maya Angelou Activities based on the Vietnam war - music and extract from ‘The Things They Carried’ by Tim O’Brien Opportunity for guided writing in response to the learning, peer feedback and improvements. Poem and extract included. At each stage, pupils are encouraged to record their thoughts on the stars and stripes of the black and white flag uploaded here. Links to videos in the notes section of the appropriate slides.
