These challenge cards are very good as an opening or finishing task and, when laminated, can be used again and again. They include various aspects of literacy, including punctuation, grammar, vocabulary, dictionary skills, and other VCOP skills. There are 19 documents in total and the others, if you are interested, will have the same title with a different number. Most of the ideas are my own, but I have used some material from other TES users, just in a different format.

This activity contains a combination of all 4 and a final challenge that will allow you to see who has got it!

Alliteration poem example

I created this as an example piece of alliteration poetry. Children would ideally have learned about the technique of alliteration beforehand. They can analyse the poem to pick up on success criteria before going on to write one of their own, either on the same or a different topic.

Fill in the blanks

(2)
My pupils loved these quick fill in the blanks tasks. I have made these up myself because I couldn't find any resources like this in school or online. This activity encourages children to improve a piece of writing by adding adjectives, adverbs and other interesting words. These could be simplified or extended depending on ability.

Full stops and capital letters

(1)
Two excerpts from Roald Dahl texts - The Magic Finger and Matilda. These excerpts have been typed out without any full stops or capital letters. I have been encouraging children to read aloud to listen for where the full stops should go. This is a basic skill that so many children need to develop.

Demon Dentist adding speech marks

(1)
Children are required to rewrite the passage, which is an excerpt from The Demon Dentist by David Walliams, including the punctuation associated with speech marks. Children should: put inverted commas around what it being said; use a capital letter at the beginning of speech; separate speech and text using a comma (unless there is already ? or !); and they should take a new paragraph for a new speaker, when the text continues after speech, or where you would normally take a new paragraph.
