Spelling strategies for the Year 5 & 6 statutory spelling words set by the government.
Children can use mnemonics, silly rhymes and alternative ways to say the words to help them spell all of the statutory words.
I made this resource to support my Year 5 & 6 pupils learn how to spell the words set by the government.
This resource can be used effectively as:
A lesson starter
An activity during registration
Word of the day
The powerpoint slides can be printed out as posters to form a display once a new word has been introduced.
The spelling strategy for each word can be reinforced in spelling tests.
Dyslexia pupils have benefited from alternative ways to look at the words.
Turn the spelling strategies into a game - the first person who can give me a spelling strategy for…will go outside to play first etc.
Play hangman using the words that children have spelling strategies for - they will be guessing the words, telling you the strategies and spelling the words correctly in no time!
Regular reinforcement of these strategies works best.
**What is the resource? **
It is a Microsoft Powerpoint presentation designed to be used in class to help children to learn / revise the Year 5 / 6 statutory word list.
SATs REVISION resource.
Each word is shown on one slide and a quick, five minute (max) activity follows to help reinforce the spelling of that particular word.
There a range of spelling activities to ensure variety and so that pupils do not get bored doing the same spelling activity over and over again.
At the end of every ten words there is a quiz that children can complete independently / in pairs / as a small group in teams.
**Who is it suitable for? **
This resource is suitable for pupils in Year 5 & 6 who are learning or revising the Year 5 & 6 statutory spelling words.
**Possible ways to use the resource: **
The resource is designed to be used as a lesson starter or as a quick, five minute filler. It reinforces how to spell each word listed on the Year 5 & 6 statutory word list.
I have used this Powerpoint at the start of English lessons.
I have used this Powerpoint to reinforce the spellings on the statutory word list and to ensure that children are familiar with the words.
I have used just the spelling quizzes to help children revise the spelling list when revising for SATs.
I have used this resource when teaching both Year 5, Year 6 and mixed Year 5 /6 classes.
Dyslexic pupils are able to access the spelling activities.
Spelling strategies for parents to use to support children to learn their spellings.
Spelling strategies range from ‘picture the word in your head’ to ‘spelling in strange places.’
This is a useful sheet to hand out to parents at the start of the year / at parents evening / to support children at home who struggle with their spellings.
Strategies can also be used in the classroom and activities can be tailored to suit KS1 and KS2 pupils.
