A series of tasks differentiated from 1 -3 for Entry Level 1 - Level 1 IT Functional Skills students to practice. Pupils use the real life data to create a spreadsheet and practice budget tasks. Additional questions allow pupils to query the data and prove to the teacher that formulas have been used! Pupils are asked to format their work so that it is suitably presented with key information clear to the reader.

This is an activity for SEN pupils gaining underpinning skills for ICT Functional Skills from Entry Level 2. There are 2 tasks. Ask them to create the one they are most comfortable with first then challenge them with the second! The learning objective is to include a table to organise information but to also full format the posters. Refer to my FIBBBS lesson for additional formatting skills. Provide pupils with local addresses and local dialing codes to engage.

SEN Functional Skills ICT Word formal letter (job application) task

(1)
Pupils create a formal letter, applying for a job. Pupils choose the skills they think they bring for the position from a colour coded selection. Ask pupils to use their school address to protect their own personal information - they may well not know their own address too. The task promotes pupils to work independently.

This resource was created for Entry Level 1 - Level 1 ICT Functional Skills students. Pupils are given sheet 1 to spot the problems. This can be completed as a group discussion with pupils highlighting problems on the IWB. Pupils then write a short formal message, screenshot and label key parts of the message.

This lesson allows pre entry to Level 1 pupils create a product. I used it to create a Mothers Day gift. This was regarded as an excellent/outstanding lesson. Pupils were able to work as independently as possible using maths, English and ICT. (ICT where time permitted to create their own labels). You will need to buy sugar, essential oils, olive oil, jars and ribbons.

Tally and bar charts for Entry Level 1-3 pupils

Start with the Lego resource as this shows a bar chart. Follow with the chocolate resource as this shows E1 pupils how to set out a bar chart. Continue with fruit and transport activities. Lots of opportunities to reinforce the idea of data, creating tally and bar charts and the importance of labeling charts. Peer assessment activity for each.

SEN Book Day dream jar activity

After showing pupils a clip from Roald Dahl's BFG and/or reading an excerpt, ask pupils to think about what would be in their dreams for the future. Resource has images for them to think about. Pupils draw a jar and cut and paste the relevant images. More able will be able to copy the text and add their own ideas. For an extension ask pupils to draw a bottle using Paint and label their dreams. The images drawn in the bottle do not have to be an accurate representation.

Word formatting scaffolding/revision guide

This is a resource I created to help my ICT Functional Skills Entry Level 1 - Level 1 students with a range of SEN, remember the formatting they should be including in their posters to gain them maximum marks. Differentiated sheets are included, with and without image prompts. Encourage pupils to make a poster for each of the formatting techniques suggested to act as a revision guide so they can work refer to them and begin to work independently, or use as a tick sheet for each poster. Poster suggestions and a mark sheet provided. Using it over the last 2 years I have seen the number of students passing the Level 1 exam rise from 1 to 9 students. The resource could be used in a mainstream Primary setting and across a whole school curriculum when creating posters to demonstrate learning for other subjects.

Entry level Functional Skills Valentine Excel coordinates (heart). Cell referencing

(0)
Co ordinates for pupils to colour fill to reveal a heart shape. I used this with E1 - E3 Functional Skills pupils as a starter to reinforce cell references. Common misconception - the lower ability pupils tend to colour fill the named cells only, not the range. Challenge - pupils design their own shape, record the coordinates and ask a peer to replicate thier shape, using only the coordinates.

Explaining the term stakeholder, to low ability/SEND

Hi There is a PopwerPoint presentation showing the differing stakeholders in a business. The background is money to show that money is important to all stakeholders. There is a sheet which I recommend printing on A3 paper for pupils to glue the correct images onto the diagram. The final page gives an idea of how this should look when complete. The information is also recorded as a list with space for the correct images to allow for differentiation.

Maths estimate and measure

Differentiated resources. I created these for SEN pupils to allow them to estimate the height of a number of blocks and then allow them to measure them. The levels would relate to previous national Curriculum 1 and 2. You will need blocks and also I made paper rulers that started from 0 as SEN pupils struggle to correctly position a traditional ruler with a space before 0.

Create Christmas wrapping paper

Pupils create simple Christmas motifs in Paint and copy and paste to Word adding suitably formatted text to create a sheet of wrapping paper with a repeat pattern. Activity allows pupils to practice design and mouse skills. I use this with a range of SEN pupils and it is a good opportunity to underpin copyright laws too by asking pupils who their designs belong to and what they are allowed to do with them.
