Factors, Multiples and Primes

(157)
A lesson on discovering what factors, multiples and primes are. Hopefully follows a fairly logical process, with a quite difficult activity to end on.

Compound Areas

(20)
A lesson resource with a main focus on calculating missing lengths from compound shapes. Attempts to address the confusion between area and perimeter.

Maths Quiz 2013

(32)
This is a group-based Maths quiz to end the term on! Differentiated to 3 levels, so should be at least partly accessible to all. A couple of resources have been compiled from elsewhere. Activities include: Starter puzzle solving worksheet, group-based multiple choice questions on old SATS questions, Only Connect-style matching game and Collective Memory task. All answers included. EDITED: Now updated with an answer sheet so all the answers for the only connect round can be placed on it!

Simplifying Algebraic Fractions

(28)
Goes through how to simplify algebraic fractions. Also states how to factorise linear and quadratics when simplifying, with questions on each. This has been used after a recap lesson on basic fraction calculations, and will be followed up with a lesson on solving algebraic fractions, covering identities.

Negative Numbers

(24)
This is an introductory lesson to integers less than zero, which leads on to rudimentary calculations and subtracting negative numbers. This often spreads over two lessons, I find, after a discussion on whether negative numbers actually exist and some number line activity in the classroom, showing students that subtracting negative numbers is akin to facing 'the negative direction&', but then having to walk backwards.

Negative Numbers 3

(10)
The final lesson in this series on negative numbers considers multiplication and division of negatives. Contains the Standards unit on this module, along with some questions for students to attempt.

End of Summer 2013 Quiz

(19)
This is a group-based quiz for the end of term! Please note, in the general knowledge round, I have deleted questions 8 and 17, as they related directly to my school. The link is that all rounds have a prime number of questions! NOTE: Some of the pictures on the review of the year round have not uploaded correctly for some reason. For some reason though, they are fine on the answers PPT, so you can simply copy them across!

End of year Summer 2014 Quiz

(12)
An update to last years 2013 quiz. Same format this time around, with minor tweaks here and there. Questions 7 and 17 have been removed as they are specific to my school, but shouldn't take too much to adapt! I&'ve yet to run this at my school, so if there are any comments/errors, please let me know!

Area and Perimeter Problem Solving

(7)
Some reasoning questions around the topic of area and perimeter. Lots of opportunities for class discussion about methods and problem solving, and linking in to solving algebraic equations and simplifying expressions!

HCF / Common Factors Lesson and Game

(1)
This task gets students to develop their knowledge of highest common factors by the back door. This is specifically aimed at younger students and does not go into prime decomposition. What it does provide is an excellent introduction to the topic, and each time that I have used this resource I have had very high student buy-in to the concept! I've also run this as a class 'league', awarding students with positive achievement points or other prizes.

Fractions, Percentages, Decimals

This is a lesson that I used last year on FDP conversions. Given the new curriculum, I will eventually get round to splitting this into 2/3 separate lessons!

Constructing triangles and congruency

(7)
Establishing the link between congruency and the various types of construction of triangles. This was used primarily as a connecting lesson between the two sub-topics, after a couple of lessons purely focused on constructing triangles.

Compound Shapes and Algebra

(4)
I used this lesson as an exercise in getting my students more comfortable with forming equations from shapes with algebraic dimensions, something my class really struggled with. The starter for this lesson was from an excellent resource that I found on here (I think it it something like 'higher tier starters&') - if I can find the resource again, I&';ll happily tag and recommend!

End of Year Quiz 2016

(0)
Thank you for looking at the latest version of my End of Year quiz! I have done a quiz such as this each year now for the past three years and the feedback I've received has been phenomenal, thank you so much! This is best used as a final lesson of the year, perhaps in pastoral time, to reflect on the year that has passed and to hopefully go into the Summer holiday in a more relaxed and enjoyable fashion! This quiz contains five rounds: - A maths round that assesses numeracy and is accessible for most students from (in old measures) Level 4 and upwards. This can be timed to increase/minimise the difficulty - A monthly review of the events of the past 12 months, with a story that was big in the news used as the focus point for a question relating to it. - A movie round that shows screenshots of popular movies released within the past 12 months. - A general knowledge round - A music round that contains snippets of songs released in the past 12 months for students to identify The Maths round can of course be changed to something more appropriate to your subject specialism or for another round entirely of your choosing. I have merely included this as it will be the one that I will use!

Fractions and Proportion - A self-study guide

(0)
Thank you for viewing this resource! About a year ago, I had a couple of Year 10 girls who were almost driven to tears each time the word 'fraction' was mentioned. Everything about the topic just confused them. They had obviously missed, or at least misunderstood, some very key concepts from earlier on in their studies. Due to the amount of work that needed to be covered to catch them up, I decided to make this self-help guide for them to do in their free time. The results were a resounding success. They were right back up to scratch within a couple of weeks of going through this guide. Even if you weren't to hand this out 'as-is', hopefully there are a few ideas in there that might make you think about alternative ways to demonstrate the concepts from first principles. Thank you once again for looking, and I hope you enjoy this resource!

Higher Paper Revision Sheet

(8)
Here is a double-sided colour revision sheet for higher pupils, covering grades B, A and A* topics. Most of the topics I've listed here (which cover the vast majority if not all of the A/A* grade topics) have been refined to address some of the mistakes that my class in particular have made (hence the only reference to bounds being when you have to round to the nearest 5!). This sheet was made in response to a number of my pupils telling me that they don't know what to revise for maths, as they don't know what they have to remember! Feel free to adapt as necessary!
