A resource I use as a bridge between IGCSE ESL units on Media and Entertainment and Environmental Issues - students think about different environmental issues before exploring the highly polarised debate on Climate Change through contrasting media representations. The resources are based on the June 2012 Paper 3 text on taking a gap year and first focus on students finding evidence for their arguments in the text before asking them to analyse an exemplar answers according to key elements of an effective Directed Writing response (voice, sense of audience, arguments and evidence).

Using a student response from Digger’s IGCSE ESL Wriiting book - students here analyse the positive and negative features of a student’s response to a School Magazine Article prompt on exam advice for students. This can be easily adapted and expanded upon, for example by asking students to improve certain sections of the response.

Based on the IGCSE EFL November 2012 Paper 31, this presentation and exemplar response function as guided exam practice for students to consolidate understanding of the requirements of the Directed Writing task. A pre-reading discussion task activates student thinking and after the main reading task, an exemplar response analysis key is included to guide students towards understanding of the key elements of an effective argumentative letter response.
