Rain Player Writing Unit – Year 5/6 (WTS , SEND Inclusive) This comprehensive writing unit is built around Rain Player by David Wisniewski and is perfect for Year 5/6 classes and Teachers who require a characterising speech outcome. Carefully structured to develop writing stamina and quality outcomes, this unit was taught alongside a Maya topic and contributed to a high-quality moderated piece of writing. I couldn’t find a unit of work for this book, so I made my own and the outcome was one of the best ones this year. I hope others can also make use of these resources.

The Water Tower by Gary Crew – Year 5/6 English Planning Pack Overview: This unique English lesson series explores the mysterious and atmospheric picture book The Water Tower by Gary Crew and illustrated by Steven Woolman. Aimed at upper Key Stage 2 (Year 5/6), these lessons harness the book’s rich visual and textual storytelling to develop pupils’ inference, comprehension, descriptive writing, and critical thinking skills. Whats included: PPT’s and books slips for 7 x 1 hour sessions, but could be spread over a longer time as there is so much to explore Targetted Year 5/6 spelling practice daily Diagnostic session for characterising speech *Text deconstruction of the book over three lessons Skills build up for a main write Mini writes built in to help with assessment Character description session Characterising speech final write. SEND scaffolds (where needed for my class) Peer marking and assessment opportunities throughout This book is always a highlight in my classroom, and has the children engaged throughout. Great for boys writing groups and SEND because of the illustrations and hidden messages. I would recommend ordering the actual book because the orientation and they way its presented is clever and adds a whole other layer to classroom discussions. This is a must, if you are looking for a great hook into writing! There is a follow up book which is a great end to the unit- of course its another cliff hanger though! Planned and delievered with great success by an English Lead.
