Year 6 Greater Depth Place Value Investigations

(0)
Year 6 Place Value Greater Depth maths investigations for high-attaining pupils, with challenging reasoning, problem solving and proof tasks. This complete unit contains 8 high-challenge mathematical investigations designed for pupils who are secure with the standard Year 6 content and need opportunities to think more deeply. Rather than simply giving pupils larger numbers or moving them on to the next year group’s curriculum, these investigations keep children working on the same Year 6 Place Value objectives while increasing the level of reasoning, independence and mathematical thinking required. The investigations cover: • Numbers to 1,000,000 • Numbers to 10,000,000 • Reading and writing numbers • Powers of 10 • Number lines • Comparing and ordering integers • Rounding integers • Negative numbers Tasks include constraint puzzles, missing information, multiple-solution problems, number-line investigations, reasoning challenges and “possible or impossible?” proof problems. A particular emphasis is placed on children explaining why an answer must be true, proving why something is possible or impossible, finding all possible solutions and convincing another mathematician that their reasoning is complete. What’s included? Each of the 8 investigations includes: • a pupil investigation sheet • a practitioner/teacher guidance sheet • a solutions and mathematical thinking sheet 24 sheets in total. The practitioner guidance includes useful questions, common misconceptions, teaching prompts and suggestions for extending pupils’ reasoning without over-scaffolding the mathematics. Designed primarily for high-attaining Year 6 pupils, these resources may also be useful for Year 7 intervention, transition or mathematical reasoning work. The investigations can be used alongside your existing maths scheme, as greater-depth lesson work, independent challenges, small-group investigations or enrichment activities.
