This is an absolutely stunning and thought-provoking book that always captures the imaginations of UKS2 children. It enables them to see the war through the eyes of a young German girl. A five day unit that explores a variety of skills and objectives. Lesson 1 - a focus on prediction and inference. Lesson 2 - a focus on prediction and continuing the story in the style of the author. Lesson 3 - exploring a powerful image in the book and describing it with a focus on capturing the emotion behind the image. Lesson 4 - a focus on editing writing and producing a newspaper article. Lesson 5 - a diary entry as a WW2 soldier and exploring the end of the story. Lesson 1 - 3 have spelling starter activities that focus on the -ible and -able suffix. A one off lesson for a book thened day -Wolves by Emily Gravett links brilliantly with encouraging children to attend their local library. The Smart Notebook begins by exploring the PMI question - What if there were no libraries? It then explores the book and encourages UKS2 children to see the story through the eyes of a wolf. The task is a comic strip of the book. This ideally can be done in pairs and the comic strip template can be enlarged to A3. Contains a Smart Notebook, PowerPoint and Word Document.

UPDATED OCTOBER 2023 Henry’s Freedom Box - A True Story from the Underground Railroad by Ellen Levine. Henry dreams of freedom from slavery and injustice. When his family is sold away from him, he risks everything to do what he knows is right. He mails himself to freedom! A brilliant picture book that can be used as part of Black History Month or when teaching and learning about slavery. This one week unit focus is journalistic writing and the outcome is writing a newspaper article. Other activities include a prediction task and an axis of emotion.
