Critical Theory Made Easy – GCSE Literature Postcard Activities

(0)
Critical Theory Resource Pack This resource is inspired by the original “Postcards from the Dead” idea (created collaboratively by teachers on Twitter) and adapts that approach for a new set of GCSE English Literature texts. While the original resource focused on Macbeth, A Christmas Carol and An Inspector Calls, this version has been completely rewritten and redesigned to support the following texts instead: • Romeo and Juliet • Jekyll and Hyde It uses the same highly engaging “postcard” format to introduce students to a wide range of critical perspectives and literary theories, helping them to develop sophisticated, conceptual interpretations of the texts. The pack includes activities and discussion prompts based on key critical approaches, including: • Marxist theory • Feminist theory • Jungian archetypes • Freudian theory • Aristotelian theory • Structuralist theory • Nietzschean philosophy • John Locke’s theory of ‘tabula rasa’ (nature vs nurture) Each postcard encourages students to view characters, themes and events through different critical lenses, making it ideal for stretching more-able students and supporting those aiming for the highest grades at GCSE. This resource is perfect for: ✔ Extending top-end GCSE students ✔ Developing AO3 context in a meaningful way ✔ Encouraging independent, critical thinking ✔ Revision sessions and enrichment lessons ✔ Classroom displays or group discussion tasks The materials are fully adaptable and can be used as lesson starters, revision prompts, or independent learning tasks. A creative and challenging way to bring literary theory into the GCSE classroom!
