Year 9 Identity Poetry Scheme of Work | Welsh Identity | WJEC GCSE Skills | Full Unit + Booklet

(0)
A complete Year 9 Identity Poetry scheme of work exploring identity, Welshness, belonging, culture, migration and resilience, while beginning to develop the analytical, comparative and oracy skills learners will need for WJEC GCSE English. The resource includes a student booklet alongside a sequence of accompanying PowerPoint lessons, with activities designed to gradually move learners from understanding the concept of identity to analysing poetry, considering writers’ contexts, comparing poems and discussing their interpretations independently. The scheme is designed to provide plenty of scaffolding and gradual release, including Do Nows, retrieval activities, sentence starters, modelled responses, comprehension questions, analytical prompts, discussion tasks and comparison grids. It therefore works particularly well as a KS3-to-GCSE transition unit, introducing GCSE-style skills without losing the accessibility and creativity of a Year 9 poetry unit. Included in the download: a student workbook, individual lesson PowerPoints covering the sequence, poetry analysis and comparison activities, creative writing tasks, contextual material, GCSE-style questions and paired discussion/oracy preparation. A particularly useful unit for schools looking to develop Welsh identity and Cynefin, diversity and belonging alongside English Literature, literacy, oracy and GCSE preparation.

Whole Year KS3 Literacy Booklets | Years 7, 8 & 9 | Morphology, Spelling, Grammar + Sentencing

A complete, progressive literacy programme for Years 7–9, designed specifically for short, regular form-time literacy sessions, intervention, English starters or whole-school literacy. The booklets take inspiration from morphological approaches used within literacy interventions, encouraging students to understand how words are constructed rather than relying solely on memorising spellings. Students explore root/base words, prefixes and suffixes, considering how adding or changing a morpheme can alter a word’s spelling, meaning and word class. For example, students explore prefixes such as un-, re-, mis-, dis-, de- and over- and suffixes including -ing, -ed, -ness, -er, -est, -tion, -cian and -ly/-ally. This word-breaking approach is designed to support both spelling and vocabulary comprehension. Across the programme, students develop their understanding of word classes, verb forms, singular and plural forms, prefixes, suffixes, spelling patterns, commonly confused words, sentence structures, sentence types and punctuation, alongside opportunities to apply their knowledge through sentence and extended-writing activities. The Year 7 booklet, for example, teaches nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs before developing students’ understanding of morphology and spelling. Progression is built in throughout: Year 7 focuses on securing the essential foundations; Year 8 revisits these concepts through more ambitious vocabulary and increasingly challenging spelling rules; Year 9 expects greater independence and introduces more sophisticated morphology, grammar and punctuation. The Year 9 booklet also begins by explicitly recapping key word classes, sentence structures and sentence types, making the programme cumulative rather than treating literacy skills as isolated topics. Each section provides clear explanations and examples followed by short, focused tasks, making the resources particularly suitable for approximately 10–20 minutes of regular form-time literacy practice. Activities include identifying and classifying words, matching words to meanings, manipulating prefixes and suffixes, correcting spellings, applying spelling rules, completing sentences, proofreading and producing students’ own sentences. Ideal for: form time • registration activities • whole-school literacy • KS3 English starters • literacy intervention • spelling intervention • cover work • homework • SEND/literacy support • retrieval and consolidation.
