Tuition Information Pack - Getting Started

(0)
When I wanted to start up as a primary school tutor working from home I spent many hours looking for information and creating paperwork. I have put the best bits together in my Tuition Information Pack. It includes a 'To Do List' to get you started and links to show you how to register your business for tax purposes, get a CRB, obtain public liability insurance if you are tutoring at home and how to write your CV. It also has some links to some free assessment and teaching resources that I have found useful. I've included the 16 pieces of paperwork that I use including an invoice blank, planning formats, pupil information sheets and a phonic screener. Some of the general information is relevant to tutors of older children but it is a resource aimed at primary school tutors.

Phonics Assessment - Looking for the gaps in knowledge

When I am working with individual children or small groups of children who have phonic gaps for a variety of reasons e.g. glue ear, absence from school, dyslexia I have found that all the published phonic assessments don't pinpoint the exact phonemes that the children are struggling with. I have listed all the phonemes with examples of real words and non-words. I don't test the children on every phoneme but I select the areas that I think they may be struggling with to pinpoint where I need to target my intervention next.

Behaviour Chart to record an individual pupil's behaviour and to look for reasons for the behaviour

I've attended a number of excellent behaviour courses over the years and during that time gathered lots of ideas together. A couple of the courses recommended completing ABCs to record what happened before an incident as well as after to try to see what caused the child's behaviour or what motivates them to repeat poor behaviour choices and therefore what could be done to prevent it happening again. I've put these ideas together in an explanation sheet and I've also created a blank to do the recording.

Times table 2 minute speed test with answers

I've listed about 120 times table questions and children have to do as many as they can in 2 minutes. Each week they have to try and improve their own score. I use it with whole classes and also with my 1:1 students when I tutor. I always give the child/ren a times table grid to look up those they don't know to help them gradually remember all their tables.
