Junior to Middle Primary. Uses the Chinese (mandarin) characters and pinyin to introduce five of the common colours.

A comic strip featuring "Kai wen Kao la" (Kevin Koala). Kevin Koala is lost in Beijing and has just met a local Panda. Resource for grades 4 to 9. Students listen to the teacher pronounce the words first, translate the pinyin to English and then take turns to role play the comic strip. Extensions can include using the dialogue and other known words to continue the comic.

Chinese paper cut patterns celebrating 2018 - the year of the dog. Patterns are symmetrical. Fold the paper in half to cut. Glue the finished cutting onto a coloured piece of paper (red preferred). Suitable to middle and senior primary to junior secondary.

For Upper Primary to lower Secondary. Some background knowledge of phrase used in Chinese for shopping and haggling is needed. Kevin Koala is trying to buy a hat. the shop assistant shows him a hat which he tries on and likes. The shop assistant then asks Kevin if he would like to buy it, to which Kevin replies Duōshăo qián? (How much?) The students need to place the correct phrases in the correct speech bubbles and then continue the conversation. Follow up activities could include creating a comic strip and / or a play to act out to the class.

An Indonesian language session on the theme of food and going to a restaurant. The lesson features a comic strip about a cat (Kucing) and a fish (Ikan) going to an Indonesian restaurant to order dinner. Aimed at a secondary college or proficient level. I have used this with a Year 10/VCE class. The drawings are my own. Enjoy!

Kevin Koala continues his journey through Beijing with Xiongmao Hao the panda. The comic conversations cover introducing yourself (“Wo jiao Kaiwen Kaola”), asking surnames and names (“Nin gui xing?”) and asking about nationality (“Ni shi Aodaliyaren ma?”) Student tasks include, reading the comic, translating onto the page and role playing the comic to each other.

Celebrate the Chinese New Year 2018 with this poster. Once downloaded, it can be enlarged to an A3 size and made into a poster to decorate the language classroom and/or school. The colours used, red, apple green and sky blue, are specific to the Year of the Dog in the Feng Shui tradition. The dog’s bark (gou, gou) is the Chinese word for dog.
