A series of 30 full lessons exploring big ideas, themes, language and structure within the novel The Hate U Give. This SOW is designed for year 9 middle ability students. It explores themes such as police brutality, racism, social class and violence. This has replaced ‘Of Mice and Men’ in our school and seeks to engage students with modern day societal issues. These lessons incorporate narrative writing and reading skills to allow students to explore the contemporary story. It has been planned by 2 AQA examiners who are also leaders within the department to ensure that students are prepared to tackle big ideas when they reach KS4. It also includes a full comleted medium term plan for the department to use alongside the lesson slides.

This collection consists of 2 lessons - one analysing the poem Tissue and one focusing on the comparison of Tissue and Ozymandias. There is also a teacher help sheet which contains really clear, detailed analysis when analysing this poem. These lessons have been planned by an AQA examiner and aims to solidify students’ understanding of a higher ability poem, whilst helping teachers take clear steps in teaching this.
