PLANNING A JOURNEY - RACE ACROSS THE WORLD CHALLENGE - END OF TERM FUN

(0)
A fun challenge for children to use a variety of maths/ life skills in a ‘real world’ context. This is based on the show that is currently on TV called ‘Race Across the World’ where teams need to get from the starting point to a final destination, passing through various check points in different countries. Children could work in teams using laptops or iPads to plan their journey to each checkpoint. They will use each sheet to record modes of transport, times of arrival and departure and the total cost of each part of the journey. Perhaps the next train isn’t until the morning, they may have to find accomodation. Added challenge could be to do it within a budget/ using the least amount of money or in the quickest time. Prizes could be awarded for cheapest journey etc. Slides can be printed to a full page and then printed on A3 to allow children lots of space to work as a group and record in their own way in the blank space. I plan on doing this with my P7s as a fun challenge to work on over the next few weeks. This develops valuable life skills they will no doubt build on as they progress through the next chapter of their lives. Update* Children have been taking screenshots of any tickets and prices on each website to prove they found them and have been taking a screenshot of google maps to show any parts of their journey they have done by foot.

I can use a calendar to find and compare dates, count days and weeks, and work out how long events last. A series of questions that will help children to build on their calendar skills. Children would need to have a 2025 calendar beside them to complete these. Reading and interpreting a yearly calendar Using a calendar to work out durations of events Finding specific dates Counting days and weeks Could be used for paired work where children work together to discuss the questions. Could be used as a rotation where each group has a coloured pen and answers the next question when they get to it. A selection of the questions could be copied onto a document for children to answer and record individually. Could be used to facilitate a teaching input with a large 2025 calendar on display

Listening and Talking - Oracy Group Task - Group Drawing - Magic Crayon - The Journey

(0)
A fun group task based on the children’s book The Journey by Aaron Becker. This story has no words and shows a little girl who is bored in her room. She finds a magic crayon and draws a door on her wall which she opens to find a magical world. With her magic crayon she draws different things that become real during her adventure and help her to get out of sticky situations. The children had great fun working in groups of 3 to come up with an idea they agreed on to draw if they had a magic crayon. For example, a new puppy. Each child contributed to the drawing with a different colour so that, when finished, you could see the shared work. This task helped children to develop their communication skills by working as part of a group: taking turns listening respecting differing ideas managing time sharing ideas

1 2 and 3 More & Less Dice Game

Children roll dice to get number and write it in the middle column. They then fill in the missing numbers at each side to show 1 2 and 3 more and less. Children could be asked to find 2 more and 2 less, instead of all of them. This will require them to count back and forward in their heads.
