This bar model lesson pack includes 3 worksheets, a ‘Think-Pair-Share’ Bar model question mat and bar model cards that the children can use to make their own questions for a peer. Ideal for Year 6 SATs revision and can really help the children’s understanding of parts and wholes within a context. The reasoning papers often focus on these styles of word problems and practise with the bar model can help the children solve various questions more easily. Also ideal for retrieval practice throughout Years 5 and 6. Bar Model Questions: All three sheets have 3 questions with bar models drawn to encourage understanding of how the question applies to the parts and wholes. Answers accompany each sheet. Think-Pair-Share Bar Model Mat: This Mat can be printed and even laminated. It encourages the children to discuss the questions with a partner and use the bars to help them. The challenge questions allow the children to draw their own bars if needed. Answers are provided. Question Cards: 8 question cars with pre-drawn bar models. The children can use the bar models to write their own questions. These can be shared with a partner and they can answer each other’s questions. Writing the questions themselves really helps them to consolidate their own understanding.

'Check that Grammar' quick lesson starters or extensions

‘Check that Grammar’ is a series of quick lesson starters. There are 14 in total so one can be used per week for a whole term. There is a paragraph per session where the children can work to identify the grammar errors in the text. Answers are provided and all grammar elements are specific to the Years 5 and 6 curriculum. They can be used for younger or older children too and can help with Year 6 revision. PowerPoint: This can be used as a whole class teaching resource where the texts (paragraphs) can be shared, discussed and analysed together. The children can then work in pairs or independently to identify the errors. Answers are provided after each extract. Children can also be encouraged to write and share their own paragraphs. PDF printables: All the paragraphs can be printed to allow the children to have a copy of the paragraphs on their tables so they can annotate the text. The answers can also be printed, if the children are required to mark their own work. These are designed to be quick lesson starters or can even be used as an extension activity to challenge independent learners. It’s also a great revision tool for Year 6 SATs.
