Parts of speech made fun.

For an interview I was given the challenge of making spag fun, and this is what I came up with. This lesson teaches parts of speech, e.g. nouns, article, verb, adverb, adjective ect. You can choose which terms you wish to focus on for your class. It can easily be made harder by including more complicated terms. The worksheets are differentiated - triangle is easy, square is in the middle, and circle is the most challenging. This lesson includes silly sentence consequences, there are instructions for the teacher on the PPT itself. My students always love this activity, whether they are high or low ability. For this lesson I use a small, soft ball with the parts of speech written on it in marker. You don't have to do that, but it makes the lesson much more fun. Instructions of how to use the ball and the catching activity are also on the notes of the PPT.

This lesson is aimed at high ability students. They will analyse the language of Angela Carter's 'Lady of the house of love' and then compare it to an extract from 'WWZ' by Max Brooks. There are a range of activities in this lesson and it could easily go on to become a series of lessons, depending on the depth to which your students analyse the language of the extracts.
