A fully planned 8-week English unit based on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, designed for Year 5 / Upper KS2. This sequence uses a clear reading-to-writing approach, guiding children from text immersion through to writing their own portal narrative. Lessons are carefully structured to build skills progressively, with grammar, reading and writing fully integrated. The unit includes: A complete lesson-by-lesson overview (8 weeks) Explicit grammar starters linked to writing outcomes Detailed main tasks for every lesson (easy to follow and teach) Coverage of the entire novel (Chapters 1–17) A strong focus on: setting description (including countryside vs city contrast) characterisation and inference dialogue and tension narrative structure and cohesion A clear progression from: modelled reading → guided practice → independent writing → editing and reflection Children finish the unit by planning, writing, editing and publishing their own portal stories, inspired by the structure and themes of the text.
