A differentiated creative writing lesson based on being trapped on an island. It was used with middle ability year 11 but could be easily used/adapted for any year group/class.

This is a full SOW for A Christmas Carol based on the recent AQA specifications. It includes 15 fully differentiated lessons where students get the opportunity to practise their PEEL paragraph skills before ultimately creating and answering their own exam style question. I am currently using this resource with a middle ability year 11 class who have read the text previously. This is a revision resource used with year 10. Lesson 1: Ozymandias and The Prelude Lesson 2: London and My Last Duchess Lesson 3: Remains and War Photographer Each lesson involves students recalling key ideas from the poem, completing a comparison grid and then applying the PEEL structure in response to an exam style question. The lessons are fully differentiated.

This PowerPoint contains 16 slides with a different poem on each one. There are questions for students to consider when approaching unseens poems. These could easily be used as a starter activity with a KS4 class of any ability.

A lesson exploring the links between the Battle of the Cowshed and the Russian Revolution. The main task of the lesson involves producing PEE paragraphs to analyse the event. Students are studying Animal Farm in preparation to sit the AQA English Literature exam (paper 2).

A lesson on Medusa by Carol Ann Duffy. The lesson requires students to analyse the poem on the board but the slides in the PowerPoint offer support to students as there are questions beside each stanza prompting students. There are also extension tasks to try and extend students understanding and analysis of the poem.

A student led lesson on The Clown Punk. Students need to analyse the poem individually; this could be adapted easily to suit the needs of your class. There is a support sheet available but weaker students will probably need more aid. The main task involves students responding to an exam style question.

A whole lesson on the use of satire/irony in Animal Farm. It's quite advanced and was used with top set year 9. There is a lot of support in the lesson to help weaker students access the content.

A series of seven lessons where students get to explore extracts from a variety of sources. There are a range of creative activities for students to complete to allow them to fully engage in the lessons. 1. Midnight's Children 2&3. The Count of Monte Cristo 4. The Book Thief 5. All Quiet On the Western Front 6. Life of Pi 7. The Kite Runner (the pages you need for this lesson are listed on the pdf version of the text) These lessons could be easily adapted for a variety of creative writing lessons/schemes.

A differentiated lesson used with a middle ability year 10 class to explore how pathetic fallacy can be used effectively within their writing. This could be used/adapted for any year group/ability.

A lesson on the poem Our Sharpeville. Students could analyse the poem individually or work in pairs/small groups to answer the questions on the slides about each stanza of the poem. Ultimately, the students will have to write at least one PEE paragraph in response to the poem. This could easily stretch over two lessons. Extensions are embedded but you may need to add more support depending on your class.

A lesson on the use of anthropomorphism in Animal Farm.

This PowerPoint includes three lessons based on one extract: Misery by Stephen King. Included are two complete practise papers for AQA English Language Paper 1. The two texts used for each Section A are ‘The Help’ and ‘The Road’. The extract from ‘The Help’ is slightly too long -intentionally so - feel free to adapt it for your own class. The extract from ‘The Road’ is rather difficult but my middle set year 11 class found it rather intriguing to analyse. Both extracts are found freely available online. This is a creative writing lesson which could be used with either KS3 or KS4. It’s a challenging lesson that expects students to distinguish between personification and anthropomorphism; by the end of the lesson students should use anthropomorphism in a piece of dystopian creative writing.

Two lessons on War Photographer, a poem from the Power and Conflict cluster of the new AQA specification. The first lesson explores the poem in depth with students whilst the second lesson gives students the opportunity to respond to the poem by answering a question.
