This is a unit I used with my top set S2 class that worked very well. They managed to complete this in 6-8 lessons.
The unit can easily be adapted for BGE levels 3-4. There are slides, writing frames, and a pared-down version of the lyrics for annotating.
Skills built using this unit are annotating, knowledge of poetic techniques, and how to write a critical essay.
Success criteria for this unit can also be easily adapted. I used: I can identify language techniques in a text; I can explain the effect a technique has on the reader; and, I can structure a critical essay. We focused primarily on characterisation.
