Get the pupils to work out if Guy Fawkes was guilty or not! Dot the bits of evidence around the room, then get them to get up and moving around the classroom looking for evidence as to whether he was guilty or framed! Pupils then use this evidence to then perform a mini-mock trial before you (the judge) sentence him to death anyway. In pairs they then have to discuss the lesson, then randomly select a pupil to come to the front and perform a Newsflash of what has happened to Guy Fawkes.

Flash cards designed in the style of 'Top Trumps' for the Kings & Queens of England/Britain (since 1066). These can be used for a variety of starters and plenaries or simply for a poster display. I have used these as a resource for developing chronology and introducing topics.

This lesson involves pupils imagining that they are a news broadcaster at Runnymede in 1215, and are reporting why the Magna Carta has been signed. They need to gather their information, decide which was the most important reason and then produce a news-report; full lesson plan attached.

Get your pupils to research their own family history and connections to the First and Second World Wars. This 10 page booklet will guide them through what they need to research, how to do it and comes with a structured time frame so this can be completed with a final extended writing task as a homework over a 3-4 week period. For those without family to research a list of 5 other semi-famous people have been provided on page 2. This has been used with year 9 pupils and they have really engaged with their personal connections to history.

Key Stage 3 lesson - Tudor History Students are given details on the two uprisings of 1536 and then have to put together a News Report on the events. The groups decide the direction and format of the report, however this can easily be adapted to add in more structure if required. For this lesson to be effective it does require the students to have prior knowledge of the changes to the church pre-1536 and partial knowledge of the dissolution of the monasteries. Learning Objectives - How had the Church changed? - What was the Lincolnshire Rising & Pilgrimage of Grace? - Why did the uprising happen? - To what extent was this a serious event?
