Through its accessibility, I believe this series will be more effective and efficient at improving children’s reading skills. This second book in the series re-visits the sounds “s”, “a”, “t”, “p”, “i” and introduces the sound “n”. The book includes 14 activities ranging from initial sound recognition, handwriting practice and upper- and lowercase letters to putting single sounds together into syllables and words to read and write. The subsequent books will cover ONE new sound or ONE new tricky word at a time. This way the series can be used for intervention purposes as well as practising specific skills. I have decided to split the “i” sound between two books (a and b) to maintain the “one new thing at a time” approach. Book A only covers single words, whereas Book B introduces phrases and sentences for the first time. The book includes 10 activities ranging from reading syllables to reading short phrase captions, writing short phrases and beginning to use some sentence punctuation. There are questions about the characters, the events, the grammar (parts of speech), the lesson the story teaches, but there is also a drawing task and an extra challenge task where children can practise expressing themselves and their own opinions as well as practise writing.
