International Women in STEM Day Activities - James Dyson Engineering Solutions: Hair Science
This resource is designed to accompany the resources provided from James Dyson Engineering Solutions: Hair Care
This pack has an introduction activity and then six activities which compromise of questions and practical activities based on the life of an Engineer at James Dyson working in their hair care division to develop a better hair dryer. It is designed to be set up alongside a carousel of activities around the room that the students can move between and simulate the process an Engineer would go through to solve a problem: Identify the problem, research current issues, design a way to solve the problem and then reflect on the process.
Equipment needed:
• Mini Whiteboards (Optional)
• White board pens (optional)
• A3 paper
• Sellotape
• Microscopes
• Microscope Slides
• Molymods
• Bunsen Burner and Heat proof mat
• Food colouring in a beaker
• Scissors
• Brush (optional)
• Pencils
Multiply the equipment needed to suit the needs of your class. We had multiple microscopes and molymod sets available but did the hair damage section as a demonstration etc.
I did this all together as a Science club session but there is enough content available from James Dyson’s website to split the activities up into different lessons which is how it was originally designed, I just condensed it down to suit my needs.
In total included is:
a Powerpoint containing the introductory activity and various videos (can be done without a powerpoint/videos)
Six activities which consist of questions and practical elements
A3 what is an Engineer worksheet
James Dyson information pack- reordered to suit the progression of the activities through the identify, research, design and reflect process. I also split some of the pages up and made an A4 booklet.
