Looking for a Colourful Semantics WHO resource to support early sentence building, speech therapy, and autism / SEND learners? This Level 1 Who? pack helps children understand who a sentence is about (the subject) using structured, visual, and neurodiversity-affirming strategies.
Help autistic and neurodiverse learners understand and communicate WHERE an action is happening with this practical Level 4 Colourful Semantics teaching pack.
The WHERE layer adds location and context to a message, helping learners connect an action with a meaningful place through real experiences, familiar environments and visual support.
For example:
The girl → is reading → in the library.
WHERE can be introduced once learners have some understanding of WHAT DOING and does not always need to wait until they are confidently using the WHAT layer. As learners develop, WHERE can also be added to a fuller sentence:
The girl → is reading → a book → in the library.
What’s Included?
This printable resource includes teaching guidance, WHERE visual supports, location resources and structured sentence-building activities.
The resources support a gradual progression from real experiences and familiar locations towards photographs, symbols and more structured sentence-building activities.
A Meaningful Approach to Teaching WHERE
Start with places learners know and experience every day. Talk about where activities are happening, model the language naturally and provide opportunities to experience different locations before introducing picture-based sentence building.
The teaching guidance supports progression from adult modelling to choices, sentence completion, open questions and increasingly independent communication.
Learners can communicate WHERE using speech, AAC, signing, gesture, pointing, photographs, symbols or another communication method.
The aim is to help learners understand the connection between an action and where it is happening, rather than simply naming locations.
Building the Sentence
WHERE can be added to a sentence the learner already understands:
WHO + WHAT DOING + WHERE
The girl + is reading + in the library.
It can then be added to a fuller four-part sentence:
WHO + WHAT DOING + WHAT + WHERE
The girl + is reading + a book + in the library.
Who Is It For?

Build a clear and consistent approach to sentence building with this complete Colourful Semantics Bundle, bringing together Levels 1–4 in one practical teaching resource.
Designed for teachers, teaching assistants and Speech and Language Therapists supporting autistic and neurodiverse learners, the bundle provides visual teaching resources and practical guidance for developing sentence building skills.
Level 1: WHO
Help learners understand and communicate who a sentence is about, using visual supports, photographs, sentence starters and practical activities.
Level 2: WHAT DOING
Help learners identify and communicate actions, building the connection between WHO and what they are doing.
Level 3: WHAT
Add objects to help learners build longer and more meaningful sentences.
Level 4: WHERE
Introduce location to expand sentences and add more information about what is happening.
Together, the four levels provide a consistent visual framework that can be adapted to support learners at different stages of communication development.
**Each Colourful Semantics pack is £6.00, giving the four individual resources a total value of £24.00.

Colourful Semantics WHAT DOING Pack | Level 2
Help autistic and neurodiverse learners understand and communicate what someone is doing with this practical, visual Level 2 Colourful Semantics teaching pack.
The WHAT DOING layer builds on learners’ understanding of WHO, helping them connect a person or character with an action and begin developing simple sentence structures such as:
WHO + WHAT DOING
The boy + is kicking.
Designed for SEN/SEND teachers, teaching assistants, Speech and Language Therapists, Early Years practitioners and autism specialist settings, this resource prioritises meaningful communication, real experiences, adult modelling and visual support rather than simply asking learners to name verbs from pictures.
What’s Included?
This printable pack includes teaching guidance, WHAT DOING visual supports, action resources and structured activities to help learners practise the connection between WHO and WHAT DOING.
The resources support a gradual progression from experiencing and modelling actions through to making choices, completing sentences, responding to questions and communicating more independently.
A Meaningful Approach to Teaching Actions
Whenever possible, introduce WHAT DOING through real actions and everyday experiences. Model actions during play, movement, classroom routines and shared activities, then use photographs, symbols and sentence-building resources to reinforce the connection.
Learners can communicate using speech, AAC, signing, gesture, pointing or another communication method. The focus is on helping learners understand and communicate meaningful messages, not on producing a particular response.
Flexible for Classroom or Intervention Use
Use the pack for individual teaching, small-group intervention, classroom activities and everyday communication opportunities. It can be adapted for learners working at different communication levels and revisited across familiar routines and experiences.
This Level 2 pack is part of the Colourful Semantics sentence-building sequence, helping learners move from understanding WHO towards combining people and actions before introducing additional sentence information at later levels.
Created by Alison Garza, Specialist Teacher and founder of Elevating Neurodiversity, drawing on almost 20 years of experience in education and specialist practice supporting autistic learners.
Colourful Semantics WHAT Pack | Level 3
Help autistic and neurodiverse learners understand and communicate WHAT is involved in an action with this practical Level 3 Colourful Semantics teaching pack.
Once learners are beginning to understand WHO and WHAT DOING, the WHAT layer adds another important part of the message:
The boy → is kicking → the ball.
The focus is not simply on naming objects. Learners are supported to understand the relationship between an action and what is involved in that action, helping them develop longer, more meaningful sentences.
Designed for SEN/SEND teachers, teaching assistants, Speech and Language Therapists, Early Years practitioners and autism specialist settings, this resource focuses on meaningful experiences, modelling, visual support and functional communication.
What’s Included?
The printable pack includes teaching guidance, WHAT visual supports, photographs, sentence-building resources and structured activities to help learners identify and communicate the object involved in an action.
Resources can be adapted for different communication levels and used alongside speech, AAC, signing, gesture, pointing or other communication methods.
A Meaningful Approach to Teaching WHAT
Begin with real actions and familiar objects wherever possible. Model the action naturally and draw attention to what is involved before moving towards photographs, symbols and more structured sentence-building activities.
The teaching guidance supports a gradual progression from adult modelling to choices, sentence completion, open questions and increasingly independent three-part sentences.
The key question at this level is:
WHAT?
For example:
What is he kicking?
What is she eating?
Learners can then begin to build:
WHO + WHAT DOING + WHAT
The boy + is kicking + the ball.
