Reading into Writing Unit - Odysseus Y4

(0)
In this thrilling 6-week unit, Year 4 pupils will embark on an epic adventure through The Adventures of Odysseus by Hugh Lupton, a captivating retelling of the legendary Greek myth, The Odyssey. This tale follows the courageous hero, Odysseus, as he navigates a treacherous journey home after the Trojan War, encountering terrifying monsters, enchanting creatures, and powerful gods along the way. Throughout the unit, pupils will trace Odysseus’s heroic journey, summarising each daring adventure while exploring powerful themes such as bravery, the battle between good and evil, and the consequences of the choices we make. The journey begins with engaging reading sessions where pupils will analyze the text, honing their skills to understand the author’s choices and voice. As they move into ‘reading as a writer’, they will dissect how the author crafts their story and use this knowledge to create their own mythical adventures. Pupils will then step into the shoes of a storyteller, writing their own myth-inspired tales and bringing them to life through letters and diary entries in role. By the end of the unit, they will reflect on their writing, carefully evaluating their choices and considering the impact of their words on the reader. This unit will ignite their creativity, deepen their understanding of classic hero narratives, and develop their confidence in storytelling, making for an unforgettable literary journey!
