Turf Troubles

(0)
Embeds learning objectives from LKS2 science curriculum in real life context and supports development of children’s science capital and raises aspirations. Turf Troubles is a FREE resource produced by CIEC and aimed at KS2 children (7-9 years), Scientific topic: Plants, Type of enquiry: comparative/fair tests A sports company wish to provide a turf surface at a sports ground suitable for a range of activities. Information is required on suitable grass types and the best growing conditions. They also need to know how much water will be needed, and the effects of soil type. By investigating various conditions of plant growth the children discover which will produce the best grass.

Plastics Playtime

(0)
Plastics Playtime is a FREE resource produced by CIEC aimed at UKS2 children (9-11 years), Scientific topic: materials, Type of enquiry: Comparative/fair tests, Grouping and classifying, Observing changes over time, Problem solving Primary school children test and classify plastics before investigating their thermal insulation and shock resistance properties. The children then design, make and test a package for a fragile object, using plastics and other materials. Overview: This package provides an opportunity for children to think about plastics, their diversity and their properties. The children first consider that many familiar objects are made from plastics. Density and elasticity are investigated to help identify four common plastics. Children go on to look at thermal insulation as a characteristic of plastics. The children design and build a package to protect a fragile object and investigate the effectiveness of their design. The number of activities and order in which they are done can be varied. A description of each activity and approximately how long it takes is given in the table on page 2. It is suggested that activities 1 and 1a are done first. Activities 2-5 can be done in any order, or by different groups of children who report their findings to the whole class. Activities 6-7 can also be done in any order but should follow the other activities. The material gives detailed teacher support and provides a framework for learning activities.

Embeds learning objectives from UKS2 science curriculum in real life context and supports development of children’s science capital and raises aspirations. Medicines from Microbes is a FREE resource produced by CIEC and aimed at KS2 children (9-11 years), Scientific topic: Living things and their habitats, Type of enquiry: Comparative/fair tests, Observing changes over time, Problem solving These activities provide an opportunity for children to think about micro-organisms and come to understand that they can be both helpful and harmful. The activities are put in a real life context, that of biotechnology and the development of new medicines, with the need to find the best conditions for mould growth.

Embeds learning objectives from UKS2 science curriculum in real life context and supports development of children’s science capital and raises aspirations. Cough Syrup produced by CIEC is a FREE resource aimed at KS2 children (9-11 years), Scientific topic: materials, Type of enquiry: comparative/fair tests Following a request for help from a pharmaceutical company, children learn how scientists develop medicines. First, they explore the best conditions for growing the micro-organisms which are needed to produce the active ingredient in antibiotics. They then investigate the most effective and efficient way to collect the active ingredient that it is grown in before thinking about the ideal consistency for the syrup to be administered. There is a list of the main vocabularly used in this resource which can be downloaded and used to pre teach key words, support children to talk about their science, and for assessment. As well as an introduction to CIEC’s Cough Syrup resource which covers age range, context & activities and curriculum coverage, there are also free downloadable PDF activity sheets for both teachers and children linked to the following activities within the resource: Investigating food sources for microbes Investigating the effect of temperature on microbial growth Filtration Viscosity testing
