Lurcher Dogs Learning Project
This learning resource is designed to encourage reading, writing and research through exploration of the topic of lurcher dogs.
This mini project comprises of two parts; the first is a simple reading comprehension to explore the history and origins of lurcher dogs and their breeding. Learners will discover that lurchers are hybrid dogs that are created through crossing a sight hound breed with a terrier, herding breed or other working dog.
A word bank has been included to introduce some key vocabulary that is related to the subject of selective breeding.
The second part of the project invites the learner to conduct some independent research in order to produce mini fact files for some of he main breeds of dog that are commonly used to breed lurcher dogs. Finally, the learner is encouraged to produce a piece of writing to describe their dream lurcher while discussing the traits such a dog might possess and possible breeding that might produce those traits.
This project will appeal to children and young people who are interested in dogs and perhaps specifically lurcher types. It is ideally suited to learners who are able to read and write with some fluency. Typically, children from years, five, six and seven are able to complete this work independently or with a little support.
I designed the project for older children who are working to improve their literacy skills and confidence but who do not want to complete work that is obviously for much younger children.
