This unit is three weeks and explores the text thoroughly, covering the following objectives: Identify themes, use a dictionary to find the meaning of unknown words, identify different sentence types (command, exclamation, question and statement,) proof read, edit and re-draft writing to improve it, publish writing using horizontal and diagonal strokes, identify synonyms and antonyms, identify prepositions, write direct speech using inverted commas. There are several short writing outcomes throughout the unit, leading to a longer writing outcome. There are additional grammar activities to consolidate using ‘but’ and ‘whereas’, using inverted commas, writing similes, and using the co-ordinating conjunction, for.

Simple story planning resources for pupils to plan and write a simple story based on Shrek. Five sentence story based on Pie Corbett. Pupils choose a problem and a matching solution, plan the five steps of the story, make a list of adjectives and adverbs to use. Pupils then write up their story. Obviously pupils might want to devise their own problem or solution but this resource will help pupils who struggle to generate ideas. The simple structure means you get a simple but effective story instead of lots of waffle. Suitable for KS1 or KS2. SEND friendly.

A set of EIGHT A4 writing prompts. Each prompt consists of a colour picture with associated topic words and lines below. These have a WALT included to remind pupils to use punctuation and adjectives. They would be suitable as an independent assessed writing prompt, as an independent guided reading task or as an intervention activity to encourage speaking and listening, inference or writing. Possible homeowrk activity too. Simple but useful.

A set of photographs of real-life paired socks with key questions to encourage children to reason about counting in pairs or twos. This is a small step up from using actual pairs of socks and will aid children's understanding before moving onto abstract images of pairs of items. Cut out, stick in books and write how many pairs and how many socks and encourage children to explain how they know. Or use as you prefer.
