PSHE Water Safety Lesson KS3 & KS4
See the River, See the Risk is a water safety campaign led by the Port of London Authority. This PowerPoint presentation brings the campaign to your classroom with a striking, engaging video and posters, prompts for peer-to-peer discussion and links to national water safety campaigns and other water safety resources. It concludes with a short and fun quiz to gauge the understanding of your students. Tips for delivery, data sources and answers to questions can be found within the presentation notes.
Note that the subject content is drowning, which may be sensitive for some students. In the UK and Ireland, over 300 people accidentally drown each year, and almost half of these occur between May-August.
Curriculum Area
As of September 2026, water safety is on the RSE curriculum for Secondary Schools. This lesson plan aligns to the following curriculum content on Personal Safety:
How to recognise risk and keep safe around water, including the water safety code
How to recognise and manage peer influence in relation to risk-taking behaviour and personal safety, including peer influence online and on social media
Responsible decision-making
Recognising and managing peer pressure.
Audience
The slides are targeted towards KS3 and KS4.
Duration
30–60 minutes. If needed, the lesson can be shortened by removing some of the discussion questions, or by bumping the quiz to the beginning of your next lesson to see what information has been retained. The Float to Live and Respect the Water campaigns, referenced briefly in this lesson, could also be developed into a full water safety lesson.
5.Key Learning Outcomes
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Identify the hidden dangers associated with rivers and open water
Explain the effects of cold-water shock and why it is life-threatening
Describe how peer pressure and risk-taking can contribute to water-related incidents
Apply the Water Safety Code: Stop and Think, Stay Together, Call 999, Float
Explain how to respond safely if they or another person enters the water unexpectedly
Make informed decisions to keep themselves and others safe around waterways.
