First Chapter Friday

Worksheet for students fill in based on a first chapter from a novel that you have read to them. Give them agency to rate and critique a new genre or author. Introduce your class to their next favourite author! Each Friday select a new chapter book to read aloud the first chapter to your students. This is an excellent activity to calm down a busy class while also implementing a structured activity. I have also included the white board decal that I would use to write up the essential information for my students. How do I run this activity? I print the sheet two to a page and each child gets given a worksheet. Write the author and title up on the white board or screen. Students are able to fill in the sheet while I am reading or they are given a few minutes after to finish. I gave my students the option of doing a doodle, but all other aspects were compulsory. When do I use this activity? I would often do this as a 15 minute activity before lunchtime or when a reading lesson ran a bit too quickly. I started with making this a Friday activity but my students began requesting it more and more. So, I always kept a stockpile of new books that I could pick up and introduce to them at anytime. Give it a go and see if your class loves it just as much as mine did!
