I have found this extremely good at identifying who understands key terms and for writing half equations. This is suitable for more able students in my opinion. I have made this based on the Edexcel iGCSE specification, but links well for other exam boards at GCSE level.

I have created a bonding wordsearch where students have to answer the questions in order to find the keywords. Questions cover ionic, and both simple and giant covalent. I feel this is suited to a mid to high ability student who has covered all bonding. Ideal for a revision activity that shows their understanding for these topics.

A great activity for revising metals, suitable for KS3 or KS4. I would enlarge the ‘inspiration stations’ to A3, and spread out around the room. I allow students/groups 5 minutes at each station to answer all the questions in red. They then need to answer everything on their blank clock. Another way I have taught this is for students to revise each section and then go around and make sure they have answered all the questions. Studnets engaged well with this, and requires around a 1 hour lesson to completely (potentially a little longer depending on ability)

A simple crossword that can be used as a starter or as a revision tool for the structure of the atom topic. Students will need to know the masses/charge of protons, electrons and neutrons, and where they are located in an atom. Definitions of isotope and mass and atomic number are also required.

A revision mat summarising conntent from atomic strcuture, the periodic table and valency/formulae. I have also attached a mark schem so students can self/peer-assess their answers.

A resource containing 8 different compounds for which students have to identify the bonding blunder and make the necessary corrections. All compounds at the end should be ionic. Students have to recognise charges, use of brackets, if the bonding is correct etc. Students must identify the error and then draw the correct ionic bond. there is the opportunity to provide feedback at the end, highlighting strengths and weaknesses. Ideal for mid to high ability students. I usually find students are confident drawing ionic compounds, but weak in identifying errors and applying their knowledge.
